The illusion of the clean slate

The other week I talked to you about those times when relocation is not fun as well as the opportunity to start fresh in a new place. I figured we’d stay really honest this week and talk about the space in between. One of the most common things I hear people say when they get ready for a relocation – “It’s going to be nice to have a clean slate and start over”

While moving to a new place is a great opportunity to start fresh and let go of some old baggage, it will not happen automatically. Even if the new place will be different and you might change a little bit, a relocation rarely changes the fundamental needs and values we have as individuals.

How then can you get the most out of your move and make sure to get that clean slate that you really want?

  1. Have or make sure to gain awareness of your strengths and weaknesses. Ask those around you if you’re not sure and come from a space of constructive feedback and ask for their honest opinion. Sometimes others can help us see things that we are blind to ourselves.
  2. Clean out your closet. As you start packing your clothes and other belongings it’s key to look at the other baggage as well. Some of the things we believe to be true are resourceful and helpful and some other things are simply not. Bring it all out, have and honest look at it and decide if it’s worth keeping or not. If you’re unsure about this step, you might want to contact me for a one on one chat on how I can help.
  3. Take action. If you find a belief that you’re not that keen on bringing with you, make sure to take steps to swap it for something more resourceful that will help you on your move and give you that clean slate.
  4. Be kind. Love and accept yourself. Way back when you took on that belief things were different and you did what you did back then for a reason. Now that things have changed that old belief might not really serve a purpose anymore, much like old clothes that no longer fit you.

A clean slate is possible, but it does not come easy. If you follow these 4 steps, then you’ll be much better off to create a clean slate for your new adventure and a beautiful new wardrobe to fill with colourful memories.
