“There are some things we just can’t change about ourselves and that’s a good thing!”
I came across this quote in an interview I watched recently and it hit home with me. As a coach I help people tap into their inner strength and values to remove obstacles that stop us from connecting with our real vision and purpose. This is just a fancy way to say that I help people like themselves again and get on with their life.
The thing I hear from a lot of clients though is this sense that they need to fundamentally change who they are to get what they want. This could not be further from the truth. The key things that facilitate great change are to evaluate:
- WHAT we believe to be true about ourselves and our ability (things like “I could never do x” or “That’s just not possible” )
- HOW we tackle challenges and good times (strategies that give us good and bad results)
This does not mean that we have to or should fundamentally change who we are. The uniqueness of each individual is something that should be celebrated and the more obstacles you can remove and/or become aware of, the more aligned you’ll feel with yourself.
I’ve written before about core finding as well as the power of doing something really stupid to help you move closer to what you want.
If you find yourself a bit confused here, just take this one thing with you:
The goal is never to change WHO we are, but to tweak WHAT we believe and HOW we act on it!
