I found this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt a few weeks ago and I realized how true this is, especially for expats. It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan. How you ask? Well, most people (including travellers and expats) will spend a lot of time wishing for things. More travel, money, adventure and holidays. Sometimes we get stuck in wishing we could go back home to those we miss and sometimes we simply wish things were easier.
How then can we use the wise words from Eleanor right here and now?
- Don’t waste time wishing for things you really desire, if you are not prepared to work in order to make them happen. There is no harm in daydreaming, but learn to tune into what you really want and make it happen one day in the future.
- A wish or dream can come to life with a plan. Without a plan it’s highly unlikely to ever happen. Even if your dream to live far away or reunite with loved ones back home feel a million miles away from where you are at right now – start planning. A plan gives a deadline and a step by step way to get to that place that you really desire.
- Find yourself wishing for many different things where it all feels a bit fuzzy and you don’t know where to start? Start with the biggest thing. The big move, the lifestyle, the dream career or whatever the biggest thing is for you. When you start with the biggest thing, the smaller ones tend to get moving as well.
- Does this one feel too big and overwhelming? They say that the only way to eat an elephant is in bite-sized chunks. The same goes for plans of big hairy goals. If you need some help to get moving with setting your goals and breaking it down in smaller chunks, you can download the free career checklist here.
One of the most common regrets in life are the things we never dared to do or say. Make sure to start planning to create what you want, so grab a piece of paper or your phone right now and get moving. You don’t need anything more than your dream and something to write it down with!
